ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN

We are currently searching for an Accounting Technician to perform technical and paraprofessional accounting operations work in processing and reviewing transactions in areas such as: accounts receivables, contracts administration, cost analysis, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.  In addition, they will prepare spreadsheets, perform general business calculations, reconcile and clear general ledger accounts and prepare routine journal entries.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work includes but is not limited to the following: (Note: While in general all functions/duties are essential, individual positions within this class may not require all.) This list is not intended to be complete or exhaustive.

 

1) Assists in the development and preparation of budgets and actual project costs; monitors expenditures; researches availability of funds for capital purchases; and monitors potential overruns.

 

2) Reconciles and clears general ledger accounts; maintains subsidiary records.

 

3) Prepares a variety of recurring reports and financial statements.

 

4) Reviews expenditure requests and other transactions for proper accounting classifications in compliance with established procedures.

 

5) Prepares applicable spreadsheets on a daily basis to capture a variety of data.

 

6) Performs general business calculations including discounts/premiums, ratios, amortizations, and retentions.

 

7) Sets up and maintains vendor contract files; processes payments of contract invoices, in compliance with standard methods and controls.

 

8) Identifies billable jobs; determines costs to customers; transfers funds; adjusts discrepancies; and prepares specialized billings.

 

9) Performs and balances physical inventories of SMUD general plant assets.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Basic accounting principles including reconciliations; practices of financial record keeping; primary program objectives and functions of an assigned area; technical and complex office and administrative practices and procedures; operation of personal computers and the use of specified computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and financial systems; correct business English; effective use of business office machines; mathematics to perform a variety of calculations and computations; relevant SAP modules.

 

Skill to: Perform a wide range of highly responsible and complex clerical/administrative office support functions with speed and accuracy; interpret and apply applicable policies, procedures, standards, and requirements related to area of responsibility; organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines; operate personal computers and use specified computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and financial systems; analyze and verify standard financial documents; effectively use a variety of business office equipment, including a 10-key calculator; perform multiple and diverse tasks concurrently; communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

 

Experience: Equivalent to completion of sufficient formal and/or informal education to provide the necessary knowledge and skills.

 

Education: AA degree in Accounting or equivalent experience

 

Desirable Qualifications

BA/BS degree in Accounting
